artist: claude thivierge
market: Children's books
technical info: Artworks were rendered traditionally using a combination of gouache, watercolor and pencil crayons. The artworks were then scanned and retouched digitally before being prepared for print.
artist's comments: This project was very challenging as there is little reference for the platypus on-line. The editor and art director submitted my sketches and final artworks to a zoologist in New Zealand who's specialty was in Platypus anatomy. I did have to make some modifications, but he was quite impressed with how close my artworks were to the correct anatomy. After a round of minor changes I went to color. At this stage I also had to do some changes which I did once the art was scanned. I also created an interior spread using elements from several of the initial spreads.
